Depletion of water supplies for potable and irrigation use has been a major problem in some areas of the US, particularly in Texas, Arizona and California. A changing climate, water scarcity, and increased population alter current demands on water resources. Since imported water supplies are becoming more unpredictable, municipalities are forced to pursue sustainable supply options such as Indirect Potable Reuse (IPR). The purpose of IPR is to diversify water sources in order to maximize the reliability of the region?s water supply. RO membranes are widely used for the treatment of reclaimed water for IPR, successfully removing a wide range of contaminants including inorganic salts and trace organic chemicals.
