Lancaster’s Upper Hocking WPCF is a novel membrane bioreactor treatment facility with a current rated capacity of 2 MGD and detailed design underway on an additional 2-MGD expansion. Following influent fine screening and biological treatment in a series of vertical loop reactors, mixed liquor enters one of three membrane tanks equipped with 0.1-micron hollow fiber membrane racks. These membranes provide a reliable, space-efficient, and low-maintenance means of solids separation, allowing the plant to forego tertiary disinfection and discharge high-quality effluent to the Hocking River. Periodic cleaning cycles with citric acid and sodium hypochlorite have kept the membranes operating effectively for over ten years of frequent service.
