West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) is known as an early adopter of membrane technologies for both industrial and potable reuse. West Basin has experienced severe fouling of its MF membrane in recent years as a result of feed water quality changes, aging infrastructure, and obsolete treatment technologies. In response to years of deteriorating MF performance resulting in reduced capacities and increased O&M costs, the Phase V expansion took advantage of several factors, including ozone as pretreatment to MF, PVDF MF membrane, and a conservative design based on rigorous piloting and the membrane manufacturer?s years of experience in this application. As a result, the Phase V expansion design demonstrates that no water is too difficult to treat, so long as the right technologies and treatment processes are in place.
