Strategic Water Resource for Hong Kong – 135 MLD Tsuen Kwon O Seawater Desalination Plant

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated regions that is experiencing stresses on its water resources. The Water Supply Department (WSD) of Hong Kong has initiated a Total Water Management strategy to manage demand and supply. As part of this effort, it is implementing a seawater desalination plant with 135 MLD capacity, expandable to 270 MLD. The plant has a submerged open intake, DAF, 2 pass RO to meet stringent bromide levels, post-treatment with lime and CO2 and on-site chlorine generation. The facility is procured under a Design Build Operate method, with transfer to the WSD to continue operations. The presentation will discuss planning, environmental issues and water quality results after blending with other sources.
