Wastewater from a petroleum refinery is conventionally treated with DAF, activated sludge, and two stages of clarification before being discharged to the environment. Rather than discharging the waste to the environment MF membranes and RO membranes were added to the treatment train in order to reuse the wastewater for boiler make-up and other refinery uses. The MF membrane was able to meet the goals required for pretreatment before the RO membranes.
