This paper reviews pretreatment of the 53 MGD RO treatment system for the Barcelona Desalination Plant. Pre-treatment is the key of a successful seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant. The selection of the intake location, pre-treatment design and validation through extensive pilot tests (pilot unit operated during engineering and construction period), are presented. All studies, Lab and Pilot trials were useful for optimization of the RO process, as well as O&M operation costs.
