Paper presents experience with low pressure membrane microfiltration (MF) of seawater as pretreatment for RO desalination, including discussion of seawater intake systems and their effect on the pretreatment design, ways to maximize the performance of a low pressure membrane system and the issues involved in measuring Feed Fouling Index (FFI) and Silt Density Index (SDI) values.
