The Athabasca Oil Sands, located in Alberta, contain the third largest oil deposit in the world. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is used for in situ recovery of the oil. There are several existing membrane applications used to treat produced water and many more in development. This paper discusses tailings water treatment, de-oiling initiatives, desalination and brine management as they related to treating produced water from the SAGD process.
