Planning and implementing a seawater desalination plant is a complex process and requires action in many areas such as technical feasibility, design, funding, environmental considerations, public involvement, permitting and others. Pre-treatment of a seawater facility is one of the most important technical aspects of a seawater project. Selection of a pre-treatment is based on its capabilities to treat the seawater and produced a pretreated water with a consistent water quality independently of the seawater quality variations. Pre-treatment considerations include also biological growth control. This paper will present those and other pre-treatment and design considerations that need to be addressed to ensure the success of a seawater facility project.
