To meet the growing demand for water in arid areas, most large desalination plants have opted for open seawater intakes with media filtration or UF membranes prior to RO treatment. They are susceptible to Harmful Algae Blooms (red tide) such as what happened in the Arabian Gulf in 2008-2009. Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) clarification has been implemented on the new open intake facilities and seems to have the most promise for combatting HAB events.
