A 2007 pilot study by CH2M Hill identified electrodialysis reversal (EDR) as the preferred main treatment process to reduce source water contaminants to below drinking water standards. EDR was preferred over RO due to high silica levels in the source groundwater, and over an activated alumina process. The pilot study concluded the EDR teesting demonstrated the ability of the process to reduce fluoride and arsenic levels to below CA MCLs and Fort Irwin drinking water quality goals as well as providing a robust technique for treating groundwater from their basins either individually or as blends from the basins. The preferred EDR brine waste stream treatment system was identified to consist of partial lime clarification, granular media filtration, two stage RO, and vertical-tube falling film mechanical evaporation.
