This paper provides a brief history of membranes, the characteristics of the different types of membranes, and the exponential growth in the number of installations. Applications for water, wastewater treatmentwater reuse and desalination, and the challenges that membrane treatment processes face are also presented. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the more recent membrane developments and how these developments may impact the future of membrane technologies.
