Membrane distillation is a desalination process where a vapor pressure gradient drives the diffusion of water across a hydrophobic membrane. Benefits of membrane distillation include extremely high salt rejection (100% theoretical rejection), permeate quality that is independent of feed salinity, utilization of low grade waste heat, and operation at ambient pressure. Several bench and pilot study results are presented.
