A vegetable processing facility in Kobe, Japan, peels, washes and packages vegetables for distribution. Its operation produces and average of 53,000 gpd of wastewater. The vegetable washing produces a low BOD waste but the peelings are pressed to dewater and produce a very high BOD waste. As a result, the blended wastewater was found to be high in BOD, COD and TSS resulting in a challenging high viscosity wastewater. Due to the cost of discharge to the local municipality, the company explored installing its own wastewater treatment facility.
