The discharge of wastewaters by industry is subject to stringent regulation by local, municipal, and federal agencies. Although regulations may vary, the need for improved pretreatment is generally recognized and is being enforced. Cross flow membranes provide best available technology – in a cost-effective, reliable, and less labor-intensive way – for processing oily and heavy metal-bearing wastewaters for discharge or for water recovery for recycle back into the plant. Installed to replace conventional chem/phys treatment units and to reduce significant hauling costs, industrial ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis systems meet current discharge limits, and are poised to meet future tightening regulations. Commercial membrane system examples, economics, permeate quality, operation, and recommendations on implementing ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technology to treat or recover wastewater are discussed in the presentation.
