The MA DEP has stringent discharge limits on wastewater total organic carbon (TOC) concentration which is dictated by the ground water travel time from discharge point to the public water supply source. The use of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) and RO membranes in tandem is used by the City of Wayland to meet these requirements. The RO system achieves a 90% recovery to minimize the quantity of concentrate that must be hauled from the site.
