The objective of this study is to lower the energy and chemical use for the Full Advanced Train, required in California for potable reuse. The study offers an innovative approach to mitigate biological and organic fouling of membrane systems and enhance process water quality leading to reduced operating and maintenance (O&M) costs. This is accomplished by using ozone (O3) and biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration to pretreat wastewater intended for potable reuse. The potential savings in the O&M costs are so significant that they off-set the additional energy used for O3 generation and BAC operation. This presentation will be most useful for reuse facilities implementing potable water reuse.
