Inland Empire Paper Company (IEP) is a pulp and paper mill that produces newsprint and specialty paper products in Millwood, Washington. Over the last 17 years, IEP has been optimizing its process water use and wastewater treatment system in anticipation of compliance with very low nutrient discharge limitations for discharge to the Spokane River. During this period, IEP pilot tested 22 advanced treatment technologies including 9 different membrane filtration systems. This presentation describes how IEP ultimately selected tertiary moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) ahead of pressurized ultrafiltration membranes to achieve its nutrient limitiations.
