Anaerobic membrane bioreactors offer a wastewater treatment process that uses less energy and space than an aerobic MBR. The anaerobic process leads to more frequent fouling and therefore more frequent membrane cleaning. Ceramic membranes offer the ability to last longer than polymeric membranes since they are more rugged. Pore size also plays a role in the membrane fouling.
