Pilot testing pre-treatment alternatives on a difficult to treat (i.e., high organics and taste & older) surface water was conducted. Testing trains included: 1. MIEX with coagulation and sedimentation; 2. Enhanced coagulation; 3. Enhanced softening and; 4. MIEX alone. Pilot testing included MF/UF treatment after the pretreatment. MIEX with coagulation and sedimentation provided the optimum pre treatment to minimize membrane fouling and was therefore recommended as the preferred treatment train for the updated facility.
