The City of Pearland is constructing a new 10 million gallon per day capacity surface water treatment plant (SWTP). The City has junior water rights to purchase 10 MGD raw water capacity from the American Canal, which is a man-made channel operated by the Gulf Coast Water Authority. The canal is fed by the Brazos River and natural drainage from the Oyster Creek watershed. Rapid mix/flocculation/sedimentation followed by membrane microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration (UF) was selected due to its proven track record for other SWTPs on the American Canal, which is known to be a ìflashyî water source susceptible to rapid changes in water quality. This presentation will provide an overview of the overall treatment process selection, results from extended piloting of three MF/UF systems (Pall, Evoqua Memcor, and Toray), and the competitive procurement process used for selection and procurement of the membrane system by the Construction Manager at Risk. The presentation will also discuss challenges related to the small site footprint available.
