This paper is a case study of a demonstration project that explores the use of ceramic membrane filtration technology to remove DBP precursors from surface water at the Naval Facilities Command (NAVFAC) Engineering Service Center. The systems primary goal was to remove TOC cost-effectively to control DBP concentrations in the water distribution system in compliance with the emerging Stage II DBP Rule. Discussed are bench scale tests on synthetic water samples using 90-mm diameter ceramic flat sheet membranes and a single element ceramic membrane unit that is currently being studied at a naval installation using water from a drinking water treatment plant that treats surface water.
