Biofiltration as a Membrane Pre-Treatment Technology

The purpose of submitting this abstract to Membrane Technology Conference-2019 is to present that biofilters are an excellent fit as pretreatment for membrane systems. This study describes a success story of a novel water treatment system (biofilters along with an RO skid) in the small community of Alberta, Canada. The source water is brackish well water, high in iron and manganese. Few months of operation of biofilters has produced a consistent product water quality which far surpasses standards while using minimal chemicals. RO skid has been consistent and steady (after 210 days), and the membranes are showing no need of cleaning. As a result of fewer cleaning cycles, membranes last longer between replacement, reducing operating costs.
