Meiden?s ceramic flat-sheet membrane (CFM) was developed about a decade ago. It is a flatsheet membrane made from alumina. It has a nominal pore size of 0.1 ?m. Fluid is drawn through the membrane wall, outside to in, under vacuum pressure. It was originally developed for MBR applications. One primary difference with CFM in comparison to most polymeric flatsheet membranes is its capability of handling a backwash due to the inherent strength of the ceramic membrane. This backwash capability allows the membrane to be considered for filtration applications. CFM was originally considered for wastewater applications, but it was not long until it was also considered for drinking water.
