This paper discusses the use of in-line filtration with ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for disinfection by-product (DBP) precursor reduction, the challenges experienced during start-up of the facility, and the measures taken to address these challenges. The paper also demonstrates that while the membrane processes are often the focus of membrane facility designs, traditional water chemistry problems can often be the most challenging to address in full-scale facility operation.
