About Us

Leading The Way In Business For Over 25 Years

AMTA was incorporated in May 1974 after a series of organizational meetings that were held the previous year. At that time our name was the National Water Supply Improvement Association (NWSIA) which quite succinctly explained our focus. Over the years the name has changed but the focus remains the same. These days we now ensure people are aware of the key link between what are colloquially known as Water and Wastewater and the important role played by membranes.

There has been tremendous growth in the use of membranes since AMTA was created as an organization to encourage and facilitate the education and training the engineers, scientists, utility operations staff and others.

AMTA is incorporated in Florida, governed by Bylaws and managed by a Board of Directors. Each year approximately half of our Directors are elected for two year terms and that new Board elects the Executive Committee which manages the Association with the aid of staff. The policies which are used to manage the Association can be found here and demonstrate that AMTA is a focused, transparent and well run Association.

Our membership has Divisions to represent Utilities and other organizations with operate membrane facilities (Div 1), organizations which provide the equipment and services necessary (Div2) while our other divisions comprise various individuals, students, and professors.. The Bylaws explain how nominations and elections ensure the representation of each Division on AMTA’s Board.

AMTA holds technology transfer workshops in various locations around the country. These workshops help inform communities, their planners and engineers about using membrane for to enhance their water supplies, improve wastewater discharges and meet ever increasing regulatory standards. Many workshops provide training for membrane facility staff, training that provides the necessary Continuing Education Units (CEU) require to maintain operator or professional engineering licenses.

AMTA, along with AWWA, hosts the Annual Membrane Technology Conference (MTC) which is North America’s premier event putting a spotlight on membrane technology with a focus on the latest reseatch and practical solutions being deployed by utilities, industry and commerce in an increasingly challenng regulatory market. Ever more stringent water and wastewater regulatory requirements can increasingly only be met by deploying membrane technilogy. MTC is the event to keep abreast of things

Our Vision

Solving water supply & quality issues through the widespread application of membrane technology.

Our Mission

To promote, advocate and advance the understanding and application of membrane technology to create safe, affordable and reliable water supplies, and to treat municipal, industrial, and agricultural waste waters for beneficial use.

AMTA is an Affiliate of the International Desalination and Reuse Association, IDRA, which has similarly aligned goals and objectives on the global stage. Closer to home AMTA has regional affiliates and/or chapters throughout North America all with aligned missions and visions. The Southeast Desalting Association, SEDA, the Southwest Membrane Operators Association, SWMOA, the South Central Membrane Association, SCMA, the Northwest Membrane Operators Association, NWMOA and the Caribbean Desalination Association, CaribDA.
