The early generation of reinforced hollow fiber submerged membrane systems for drinking water treatment are coming due for membrane replacement. In many cases the Membrane Filtration Guidance Manual practices for integrity management have been codified since these
systems were installed, and it is difficult to apply all aspects of those practices to these systems. On the other hand, these systems have been designed to use the high solids tolerance of these fibers. This paper shows that a high packing density module with monolithic PVDF hollow fibers could be used to retrofit reinforced fiber systems providing similar process characteristics at the system level and offering improved compliance with MFGM requirements.
