This paper reports on the reliability of a desalination plant in its six years of operation in terms of water quantity and quality, energy usage and availability. The success of this plant with its open sea intake and high turbidity Gulf of Paria water, was summarized as the following; biological control ending continuous use of chlorine, a proven plant design – no developmental features, clear definitions of plant objectives, strong operator and maintenance training programs and excellent instrumentation and computer process control.
